Healing architecture by Roskilde Fjord wins health building of the year award

The beautiful, healing environment that KHR Architecture, together with a strong team, has created for the forensic psychiatric patients at Sct. Hans, wins the health building of the year award.

"It is wonderful news that Sct. has been elected health building of the year and I hope it will help pave the way for more of the good healing architecture in healthcare. The building demonstrates that high standards of treatment and safety can easily be combined with a welcoming environment for patients and staff, and an award like this can help to make that visible," says Mikkel Beedholm, who as creative director of KHR Architecture has been responsible for the architecture of Sct. Hans Ny Retspsykiatri.

"At Sct. Hans, nature is incorporated into the architecture, whether you are inside or outside, and despite a high level of security, the décor is warm and homely. The building itself creates the necessary external security and blends beautifully into the landscape," explains Mikkel Beedholm.

An award to ensure inspiration for better health buildings

Every year, Nohrcon awards the health building of the year to highlight the solutions that work particularly well in the field and what can possibly be done even better. Anyone can nominate a building, of which a jury of experts nominates five. The winner will be decided partly by the jury and partly by the public vote.

In Nohrcon's nomination of Sct. Hans New Forensic Psychiatry the jury stated:

"The project has managed to solve the challenges of creating spacious outdoor spaces that also meet the necessary requirements for safe shielding. A beautiful building that has taken the functional requirements seriously, but also used them to create new opportunities."

"A very accommodating project carried out with great empathy for the needs of the special patients. A good harmony has been achieved with few means - a building in balance with its surroundings."

"Showing great understanding for the users of the construction. Positive with the close contact to nature everywhere in the construction. Nice use of daylight. Good choice of materials. Safe and manageable common courtyard space."

The project has been realised for Psychiatry and Capital Region in collaboration with RUBOW architects, OPLAND, OJ Rådgivende Engineers - Spangenberg & Madsen Rådgivende Ingeniørfirma A/S, MOE and a large number of professional contractors.
