Overview

Under the name Wattenmeer Station Sylt, KHR developed an institute for tidal flat research on the North German island of Sild. The new building body with its clearly visible, elongated silhouette fits into the character of the Wadden Sea landscape with long, horizontal lines against a background of mighty dunes.

Successfully linking the existing and the new

Wattenmeer Station Sylt is an extension of the current research facilities, which originally date from the 1920s. Functionally, the new building links the Wattenmeer station's scattered buildings into a whole. This has been done by building over the existing bunker used as part of the research facilities.

New setting for social and exhibition activities with a magnificent view

The project is an extension of the current research facilities, which originally date from the 1920s. The interior of the new building appears as two storeys, housing laboratory and office functions. A bright panoptic space is created between the poles. In addition to visually and physically forming vertical and horizontal connections, the panoptic space provides a setting for social and exhibition activities with a magnificent view over the dunes and waters of the Wadden Sea landscape.

What characterises good school architecture?

How do you create schools where children thrive, learn and feel at home? Janina Zerbe is an architect and partner at KHR Architecture and has many years’ experience in school construction in Denmark and internationally, including projects such as Atuarfik Inussuk in Nuuk and Schule Am Breiten Luch in Berlin. We spoke to Janina about how architecture can support learning, wellbeing and a sense of community, what makes for sustainable schools, and what local authorities and other clients should bear in mind when planning school buildings.

Interview on architectural transformation

Extension of University College Copenhagen – client consultancy

KHR Architecture is the client’s consultant for University College Copenhagen in connection with the development of new facilities at KP Campus Nørrebro, where the first phase comprises a new building for the health care programmes. The forthcoming development is intended to provide modern and flexible facilities for teaching, practical training and simulation, as well as attractive study, social and working environments. As the client’s consultant, alongside Spangenberg & Madsen, we will assist KP throughout the project’s development and help ensure a sound basis for the decisions that will shape the forthcoming construction project.

'The Children’s Hospital' is back

The Norwegian documentary series *Barnesykehuset* returns with a new series from Glasblokkene in Bergen. The first series was a huge hit with viewers, and now the series continues with new stories from life at the children’s and young people’s hospital. For KHR, the series also offers a unique insight into our architecture in use. The camera follows children, families and staff through the hospital’s spaces and shows how daylight, views, nature and space for everyday life form part of daily life at Glasblokkene.
