This week, the Diabetes Centre in Holbæk opens its doors - and both patients and staff can look forward to a beautiful new building. KHR Architecture has been a consultant for the Novo Nordisk Foundation in connection with the renovation of the beautiful old Akaciegård at Holbæk Hospital and four other diabetes centres in Region Zealand.
A common thread through the region's diabetes centres
Steno Diabetes Center Zealand opened in 2019 with a special focus on tackling health inequalities in diabetes. Around 10,000 people receive treatment at the centre each year, but the ambition is that everyone with diabetes in the region - around 45,000 people - will see an improvement in their care through the centre's work. Due to Region Zealand's decentralised hospital structure, the Steno Diabetes Center Zealand spread across multiple locations. It is also integrated into the region's mental health services.
KHR Architecture has been involved in the establishment of the five new centres from the very beginning. All centres are renovation or transformation projects in connection with the region's hospitals.
"We have conducted user processes to gain an understanding of the needs and wishes of both patients and staff. This insight was then translated into five visions and ten concrete guiding principles that have guided all five projects to ensure a good environment for all users and a common thread across the five locations." says project manager Kirsten Vittrup Bernild.
Throughout the project, input was given to the client and the architects of the individual projects to ensure the right prioritisation in relation to creating 5 high-quality healthcare buildings with a common thread across the five locations, each with their inherent differences.
Mikkelsen Arkitekter has been the architectural consultant for the renovation of Akaciegården in Holbæk.
