Hotel de Ville in Gilleleje combines transformation and new construction in an atmospheric seaside hotel where historic architecture meets modern comfort. KHR Architecture was responsible for the concept and design proposal for the project, where the former town hall from 1939 has been transformed into a spa and conference hotel with almost 40 rooms, restaurant, wellness area and sun terrace with outdoor pool. The architectural approach is based on the existing qualities of the site and continues the original expression of the building in a contemporary interpretation. The choice of materials, proportions and detailing tie new and old together and support the ambition to create an atmospheric lake and sea bath with both character and tranquillity.

Dormer windows with a view to Sweden
On the first floor, attics have been added, which fit in well with the existing architecture and provide a beautiful sea view for the lodgers. On a clear day you can see all the way to Kullen in Sweden.

"Hotel de Ville" means Town Hall in French (literally 'city hotel'), a direct reference to its original function as a town hall.
Transformation and new construction in close dialogue with the client
The old town hall and cultural centre is the setting for Hotel de Ville's rooms and a delicious restaurant with sea views and outdoor seating on the south-facing sun terrace. In front of the main building, an indoor spa area with an outdoor pool and rooftop sun deck is being excavated.
The entire project was designed in close dialogue with the client, who already runs Gilleleje Badehotel.

"By renovating the fine old buildings, the new Hotel de Ville has been given the old soul that the client appreciates, and will have a more sustainable profile."
