A beautiful setting in a cultural institution
The new staff wing provides artists and other theatre staff with a beautiful and well-functioning environment in which to work.
The new building supports the perception of the gasholder as an important cultural institution and creates new spaces for the gasworks. At the same time, the extension resolves the transition between city and urban landscape.
"The extension continues and reinterprets the industrial and rational character of the gasworks and creates a whole for the area"

From gasworks to theatre
Martin Nyrop's industrial gasholder from 1883 has been used as a theatre since 1979. After almost twenty years of hosting major productions in theatre, dance and music, Østre Gasværk Teater was given a much-needed extension in the late 1990s.
As performances grew, so did the need for more appropriate and up-to-date backstage facilities. In 1997, the new audience toilets and the new staff wing, connected to the theatre via an underground tunnel, were put into use. All designed by KHR.
A diagonal abstraction
The new building is established as a free composition. A diagonal building at the east side of the theatre clearly marks the gasholder and supports the general urban structure of the area. The internal interplay between the staff wing and the gasholder creates a holistic perception of the gasholder grounds as a cultural area.
