KHR Architecture, together with its German partner bpplan, has been selected as the architectural advisor for a school project in Satrup in northern Germany.
KHR Architecture and bpplan win bidding contest
Following a tender competition, KHR Architecture and bpplan have won the contract for three new school buildings for Mittelangeln School Centre for Schulverband Mittelangeln close to the Danish-German border. A total of 12,700 square metres will be constructed in three buildings and phases. Phase 1 comprises 3396 square metres of classrooms and subject rooms for grades 11 to 13.
"We have proposed a design based on prefabricated wooden modules. It fits well with the client's wishes for a short construction time, and an environmentally and economically sustainable profile."
"The task is interesting because we have to create a new building that both harmonises with the existing building stock and points forward. In the next phases, two run-down buildings will be demolished and replaced with new ones, and the remaining buildings will most likely be renovated. Therefore, the architecture of this first phase may well be decisive for the whole that is created in the long term," explains creative director and partner Janina Zerbe.
"Already on Wednesday we have the first design workshop with the client and the steering committee for the construction, where we will present the first sketch proposals. I'm really looking forward to getting input and feedback so that we can get down to business."
As an architectural consultant, KHR and bpplan will be involved in all project phases, from early planning to regulatory design, tendering, design and construction supervision. Once the school building for the oldest classes is completed, a 7000 sqm administration building and a 2400 sqm sports hall await.
Collaboration partner with experience in modular timber construction
"We have built up good relations and knowledge of the German market over the past years and are naturally pleased that this is showing results on the assignment front," says creative director and partner Janina Zerbe.
"This is the first time we have worked on a project together with the design office bpplan, but the collaboration is promising. bpplan is a small design studio based in Hamburg. They have a good knowledge of modular timber construction, of the region and of the applicable German regulations. We, on the other hand, have a lot of experience in school construction and digital design, and in this way we complement each other very well."
KHR has just completed the design of a big school in Berlin together with another German partner.
KHR is one of Denmark's oldest design offices and has over the years designed a number of renowned educational buildings such as Ørestad School, Utterslev School and Copenhagen University on Amager.
