Campus at Nørrebro

KHR won 1st prize in an international architectural competition with its proposal for the Biocenter. The proposal for this modern educational building is realised in Nørrebro in Copenhagen. The Biocenter is located on the Nørre Campus, the Faculty of Science of the University of Copenhagen and close to the Rigshospitalet. The competition included proposals for a master plan for a total of 60,000 m² of laboratory buildings.

The social axis

The first phase of the Biocentre proposes the design and layout of laboratories of different complexity and size, administration and common facilities. The laboratory areas open onto the park with a north-facing glass façade that lets in light and views at full floor level, while the façade of the office areas to the south is light and clad in natural stone. The laboratory wings are connected by a central north/south wing, where the horizontal and vertical movements of the building meet in an inner, bright central space that forms the social axis of the centre. The Biocentre's canteen and auditorium for 400 people are located in the park. The laboratories are performed for research in gene classes 1, 2 and 3, in the basement a barrier animal stable and nmr scanning centres are located.
