The details are taking shape at Nuuk school

3 May 2023

Attention to detail is evident in both the architecture and interior design of Nuuk School. A number of custom-designed solutions and the deliberate contrasts between the raw and the refined are starting to emerge on the construction site. See the fresh images here.

Acoustics, lighting and aesthetics all come together. Again, the meeting of different materials - the raw and the refined - creates atmosphere.
The specially developed guardrail is used in different variants depending on context and function. Here as a high staircase guard in a day-care centre. The railing provides an elegant counterpoint to the raw concrete and at the same time has a positive impact on the acoustics.

The raw, insitu-cast concrete will soon be complemented by a fine cast iron railing with wooden handrails. The stairwell is both an escape route and intended for daily use.

The in-situ cast concrete is left raw, but is counterbalanced and softened by elements and wood and colours. Here it is a large blue notice board. The use of colour in construction is a Greenlandic building practice.

The grand staircase has a section of double-height steps where you can sit down. We can't wait to see the staircase once the wood panelling has been applied.

The deep seat niches have inbuilt ventilation to avoid moisture build-up on the large window surfaces. Integrated light at the top of the frame ensures good reading light whatever the season.

Extension of University College Copenhagen – client consultancy

KHR Architecture is the client’s consultant for University College Copenhagen in connection with the development of new facilities at KP Campus Nørrebro, where the first phase comprises a new building for the health care programmes. The forthcoming development is intended to provide modern and flexible facilities for teaching, practical training and simulation, as well as attractive study, social and working environments. As the client’s consultant, alongside Spangenberg & Madsen, we will assist KP throughout the project’s development and help ensure a sound basis for the decisions that will shape the forthcoming construction project.

'The Children’s Hospital' is back

The Norwegian documentary series *Barnesykehuset* returns with a new series from Glasblokkene in Bergen. The first series was a huge hit with viewers, and now the series continues with new stories from life at the children’s and young people’s hospital. For KHR, the series also offers a unique insight into our architecture in use. The camera follows children, families and staff through the hospital’s spaces and shows how daylight, views, nature and space for everyday life form part of daily life at Glasblokkene.
