Schulzentrum Mittelangeln near the Danish-German border will have three new school buildings designed by KHR Architecture and bpplan. The project, which was won in a tender competition, comprises a total of 12,700 square metres across three buildings and phases. The client focuses on a short construction time and a high standard of sustainability, which is met by using prefabricated wooden modules.

Natural light and wood as a common material
The new school is designed with a central atrium garden that provides daylight to the surrounding common areas.
The load-bearing structures and interior walls will be made of solid wood, which is echoed in the façade elements clad in aluminium. Inside, wooden walls and ceilings create a cosy atmosphere and the warm, tactile surface of the wood helps create a comfortable learning environment for children.
The school's use of biogenic materials in the load-bearing structures significantly reduces the building's overall carbon footprint.

Wooden modules with multiple benefits
The school is being built with prefabricated wooden modules, ensuring a short construction time and a low carbon footprint. This fulfils the client's wishes for an environmentally and economically sustainable solution that meets future CO2 requirements. Architecturally, a building is created that both harmonises with the white facades of the existing environment and points forward.
