We are proud that the glass blocks at Haukeland University Hospital have been nominated for the EUmies Award 2026. The Mies van der Rohe Award recognises outstanding architecture and creativity in new works that show how architecture can create value for people and society. The award highlights projects that combine architectural quality with social and cultural anchoring and contribute to sustainable development, environment and social cohesion. As a project that creates harmony between people, nature and the built environment, Glasblokkene reflects these values. Embedded in the mountainside of Bergen, the blocks bring daylight, nature and play into the hospital. This creates a welcoming and healing environment for children, women, relatives and staff.
About EUmies Awards
The European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe Awards is Europe's most recognised architecture prize. Established in 1988 by the Fundació Mies van der Rohe in collaboration with the European Union, it recognises architectural quality and innovation across Europe.
The award recognises projects that demonstrate how architecture can contribute to sustainable development, social cohesion and everyday well-being. The glass blocks are nominated in the Architecture category, which honours completed works of conceptual strength, social engagement and technical and aesthetic quality.
The selection process for the EUmies Award 2026 is now underway, with nominations initially made by architectural associations and independent experts from across Europe. The jury itself will be announced later this year and the winners will be announced in April 2026. The award ceremony will take place in May 2026 in Barcelona, which has been named World Capital of Architecture 2026.
