Building site inspection in Berlin

22 May 2023

Construction of the "Am Breiten Luch" school in the Lichtenberg neighbourhood of Berlin is in full swing. Janina Zerbe, Lars Kragh and Carsten Hyldebrandt have been on site with our client, HOWOGE, and our German partner, Renner Architekten. The school with its double sports hall is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2025 and will contribute to a neighbourhood uplift in the Lichtenberg district.

Schule am Breiten Luch - construction site sign
The Am Breiten Luch school is being built on a challenging site in a heavily trafficked area. One of the architectural solutions is to stack the two sports halls on top of each other and raise them above ground level to optimise space utilisation, keep central piping clear and shield the learning spaces from traffic noise.
Lichtenberg is located in the eastern part of Berlin and is characterised by a traditional East German slab construction. Once completed, the new school will also serve as a meeting place for the local community by providing good facilities for sports, music, creative endeavours or gatherings of all kinds.
ABL construction
The foundation stone was laid in January and now the Am Breiten Luch school is starting to go up. All concrete is cast in situ, rather than using panels as would typically be done in Denmark.
HOWOGE is one of Berlin's municipal housing associations and is one of Germany's largest landlords, with approximately 73,500 rental apartments. Thanks to its long experience as a developer and the synergies inherent in the development of residential areas and the construction of new schools and day-care centres, HOWOGE also acts as developer for a number of Berlin's numerous school projects. Due to a rapidly growing need for more school places, a "Schulbauoffensive" has been launched and HOWOGE alone is currently building 11 new schools.
With the base slab in place and a building going up to the first floor, you can start to feel the spatialities and proportions of the school 1:1.
Janina Zerbe is happy to see what started as a competition entry being realised.
A large municipal water pipe runs across the site and needs to be kept clear of construction, which was one of the challenges in the design phase.
The cranes have been mobilised for the 5-storey building.

Wayfinding - Ministry of Foreign Affairs' goods delivery

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs experienced challenges with the goods drop-off at Asiatisk Plads. Parcel couriers struggled to find the right entrance and understand how to drop off parcels. The result was frequent intercom calls and the need for manual assistance. With a new wayfinding solution, a clearer and more intuitive process has been created, combining clear supergraphics with practical solutions to make life easier and more efficient for both suppliers and employees.
