Transparent materials in the interior architecture of the future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The project is investigating what the advent of light-transmitting materials could mean for ordinary homes. It is doing so both by examining the translucent and transparent properties of existing buildings around the world and through its own research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the future, we will have to live in densely populated urban areas. This is, in fact, the most sustainable option if we are not spread out over too large an area. Even though we will be living even more densely than we do today, we must still ensure a high quality of light inside buildings. Fortunately, we no longer need to limit ourselves to letting light in through windows. By using materials that are both strong and translucent, light can be brought in in new ways. This will have a major impact on how we design residential architecture in the future, because these properties will allow us to make far better use of daylight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to ensure good lighting conditions in urban buildings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Some materials allow silhouettes to show through, others reflect the light, whilst others distribute it evenly across the wall or create patterns and colours. In some places, the boundary between inside and outside becomes blurred; in others, one can faintly sense activities on the other side. These experiential phenomena will influence a range of social and functional aspects of the use, interior design and ongoing adaptation of residential architecture. All these factors present opportunities that can be exploited when architects design buildings using translucent materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
