Customised lighting environments save energy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Primary school provides the framework for children\u2019s daily lives for most of the active hours of the day. At the same time, the school is a workplace, a learning environment and a social community offering a wide variety of activities. Each activity places its own demands on the lighting environment, and each person has their own requirements regarding the quality of their surroundings. For most of the day, daylight is an important source of light and absolutely essential for well-being and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main assumption is that energy consumption for artificial lighting can be significantly reduced through greater adaptation to the specific needs of users and varied use of rooms and communal areas. In other words, energy can be saved by designing adaptive lighting which, using the most suitable light sources and control systems, produces the right light in the right place at the right time through dynamically adjusted lighting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Adaptive lighting based on the latest technology and knowledge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The project aims to enhance the practical potential for intelligent energy optimisation through adaptive lighting design in primary schools. These specific adaptive lighting designs are achieved by utilising the latest technologies and knowledge to create the best lighting environments tailored to each situation, thereby creating the best possible lighting environment for learning and well-being in the day-to-day practice of primary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adaptive lighting is being installed in selected rooms through a co-creation process involving teachers and pupils. A selection of rooms is being redesigned with the latest adjustable light sources, dense sensor networks and adaptive control systems. The installations are then thoroughly tested across different seasons and usage scenarios, with detailed assessments of energy consumption, building economics and the quality of the lighting environments as experienced from the user\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Co-creation ensures solutions that work in practice<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Solutions are developed through co-design processes in which all relevant parties are involved. The development of appropriate solutions depends on guided testing and engagement with end-users, with needs being identified through trial and error and repeated experimentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research involves close collaboration between designers, architects, building management, manufacturers and, not least, end users, by involving teachers and pupils and incorporating their everyday lives into learning activities.
